SUMMARY:Thursday Lecture: What Tiny Lake Organisms Reveal About a Changing Environment
DESCRIPTION:UC Davis TERC invites you to a their latest presentation at Sunnyside: What Tiny Lake Organisms Reveal About a Changing Environment.  \nZooplankton are tiny animals that drift through our lakes\, but don’t let their size fool you—they play a crucial role in freshwater ecosystems. This talk introduces these microscopic organisms\, highlights their ecological importance\, and explains what they reveal about the functioning of Sierra Nevada lakes. The introduction of non-native fish has significantly reshaped zooplankton communities\, and ongoing climate change is further altering which species are able to thrive. These small creatures offer powerful insight into the broader environmental shifts unfolding in mountain ecosystems. \nCelia Symons is an Associate Professor at the University of California\, Irvine. She has been studying lakes in the Sierra Nevada since 2013\, when she first fell in love with the region’s freshwater ecosystems. Her research focuses on how ecological communities respond to environmental change. \nDoors open at 5:00 p.m. Presentation begins at 6:00 p.m. \nTickets purchased in advance are $10 through EventBrite and free for students with a student ID. Tickets at the door are $15. Refreshments and a no-host bar will be available from 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. The lecture will begin at 6 p.m. in the Mountainside Bar at Sunnyside Restaurant & Lodge\, 1850 W Lake Blvd\, Tahoe City\, CA 96145. \nEnjoy dinner at Sunnyside either before or after the lecture where participants will be treated to 20% off their entire meal

SUMMARY:What are bees thinking?
DESCRIPTION:What are bees thinking? Cognition in captive and wild bumblebees \nBumblebees have long been studied for their learning and decision-making abilities\, but recent work has shown a range of ‘complex’ cognitive abilities and behaviors. UC Davis TERC welcomes Dr. Felicity Muth as she discuss her work at UC Davis Muth Lab using captive and wild bumblebees to ask questions about cognition in bees and beyond. Learn about her journey writing a children’s book about bee diversity and how it is used it to spread knowledge of native bees. \nThe Muth Lab work on the cognitive ecology of wild-foraging and lab-based bumblebees\, focusing on cognitive abilities that have a clear function in bees’ natural environments. Current projects in the lab include investigating cognition in relation to complex floral rewards and comparative cognition in wild bumblebees. They also work on anthropogenic effects on bee behavior and cognition\, in particular focusing on pesticide exposure.

SUMMARY:Fire Risk\, Fire Behavior\, and Post-Fire Forest Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Wildfire is reshaping the landscapes of California and our understanding of how forests function and recover is more urgent than ever. This presentation explores how Dr. Andrew Latimer and UC Davis researchers are using advanced data science\, remote sensing\, and ecological modeling to understand fire behavior\, assess fire risk\, and predict post-fire forest resilience. \nThrough cutting-edge research on how climate change and land use are altering fire regimes\, the work highlights the critical factors that influence where and how intensely wildfires burn—and what comes next. From modeling fuel dynamics to forecasting regeneration success\, this science provides powerful insights for forest management\, conservation planning\, and climate adaptation. \nJoin us for a compelling look at how the latest UC Davis data-driven research is helping to protect California’s forests\, communities\, and biodiversity in a fire-prone future.

SUMMARY:2025 Annual State of the Lake Report
DESCRIPTION:The Tahoe State of the Lake report informs nonscientists about important factors affecting the health of Lake Tahoe. It provides the scientific underpinnings for restoration and management decisions within the Lake Tahoe Basin. \nThe 2025 report summarizes data collected during 2024 in the context of the long-term research record at Lake Tahoe. UC Davis researchers have continuously monitored the lake since 1968. \nTERC director Stephanie Hampton\, Professor in the Department of Environmental Science and Policy at UC Davis\, will share report highlights during a simultaneous live presentation and webinar for an informative and lively interpretation of the most recent data.
