SUMMARY:Electrifying Transportation: Pathways to a Clean\, Resilient Energy Future
DESCRIPTION:Transportation is now the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. How can we mitigate its climate impact? \nTransportation is now the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States\, making its transformation essential to meeting climate and air quality goals. In this lecture\, Dr. Alan Jenn of UC Davis explores the rapid evolution of electric vehicle (EV) technologies and the policies\, infrastructure\, and market forces shaping their adoption. Drawing on cutting-edge research in energy systems modeling and real-world deployment data\, he examines the environmental benefits\, grid integration challenges\, charging equity considerations\, and lifecycle impacts of electrification. The talk will also address how vehicle electrification intersects with renewable energy expansion\, battery innovation\, and consumer behavior. Attendees will gain insight into the technological and policy pathways needed to accelerate a just and effective transition to low-carbon mobility. \nDr. Alan Jenn is an Associate Professor at the University of California\, Davis\, and a researcher with the Institute of Transportation Studies. His work focuses on electric vehicles\, energy systems modeling\, and the environmental and economic impacts of transportation electrification. \nTime: Doors open at 5:00 pm\, presentation begins at 6:00 pm. \nAdvanced ticketing purchased online is $10\, and same-day tickets are $15 at the door\, this presentation is free for students with a student ID. \nFor more information call 775-881-7560 or email tercinfo@ucdavis.edu.

SUMMARY:Plastic Pollution in the Tahoe Basin
DESCRIPTION:Plastic pollution is an increasing threat to freshwater ecosystems\, including high-elevation environments such as the Lake Tahoe Basin. \nIn this lecture\, Monica Arienzo\, Ph.D.\, presents current research on the sources\, transport\, and accumulation of plastic debris—from large consumer items to microplastics—entering Lake Tahoe through urban runoff\, recreation\, atmospheric deposition\, and watershed processes. She will discuss how basin hydrology influences the distribution of plastics as well as the challenges of monitoring plastic pollution in freshwater systems. The talk also explores ecological and water-quality implications and highlights the importance of science-based strategies for protecting iconic lake ecosystems. \nMonica Arienzo is an environmental scientist specializing in water quality and emerging contaminants\, with a focus on plastic pollution and microplastics in alpine freshwater environments. \nDoors open at 5:00 p.m. Presentation begins at 6:00 p.m. \nAdvance tickets are $10 through Eventbrite and free for students with a valid student ID. Tickets at the door will be $15. \nRefreshments and a no-host bar will be available from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. \n

SUMMARY:DNA Detectives with Dr. Andrea Schreier
DESCRIPTION:DNA Detectives: Using DNA in the Environment to Study Fish and Wildlife Dr. Andrea Schreier\, Director of the UC Davis Genomic Variation Lab\n\nEvery Organism leaves traces of its genetic identity behind—tiny fragments of DNA shed into water\, soil\, and air. Scientists can now collect and analyze these genetic clues\, known as environmental DNA (or eDNA)\, to detect species without ever seeing or capturing them. In this talk\, Dr. Andrea Schreier of UC Davis will reveal how her team uses eDNA to study fish and wildlife across California and beyond. From tracking endangered species and invasive invaders in the Bay-Delta to monitoring fish communities in restored wetlands\, eDNA is transforming how we understand and manage aquatic ecosystems. Dr. Schreier will discuss how this technology works\, what it can—and can’t—tell us\, and how innovations like CRISPR-based detection tools are opening new frontiers in conservation genomics. Join us to explore how modern molecular techniques are helping scientists become true DNA detectives\, uncovering hidden biodiversity in our changing world.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister here\nIn-person event details \nDoors open at 5:00 p.m. Presentation begins at 6:00 p.m. \nAdvance tickets are $10 through EventBrite and free for students with a valid student ID. Tickets at the door will be $15. \nRefreshments and a no-host bar will be available from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.\, followed by the lecture beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the Emerald Room at Sunnyside Restaurant & Lodge.

SUMMARY:Thursday Lecture: What Tiny Lake Organisms Reveal About a Changing Environment
DESCRIPTION:UC Davis TERC invites you to a their latest presentation at Sunnyside: What Tiny Lake Organisms Reveal About a Changing Environment.  \nZooplankton are tiny animals that drift through our lakes\, but don’t let their size fool you—they play a crucial role in freshwater ecosystems. This talk introduces these microscopic organisms\, highlights their ecological importance\, and explains what they reveal about the functioning of Sierra Nevada lakes. The introduction of non-native fish has significantly reshaped zooplankton communities\, and ongoing climate change is further altering which species are able to thrive. These small creatures offer powerful insight into the broader environmental shifts unfolding in mountain ecosystems. \nCelia Symons is an Associate Professor at the University of California\, Irvine. She has been studying lakes in the Sierra Nevada since 2013\, when she first fell in love with the region’s freshwater ecosystems. Her research focuses on how ecological communities respond to environmental change. \nDoors open at 5:00 p.m. Presentation begins at 6:00 p.m. \nTickets purchased in advance are $10 through EventBrite and free for students with a student ID. Tickets at the door are $15. Refreshments and a no-host bar will be available from 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. The lecture will begin at 6 p.m. in the Mountainside Bar at Sunnyside Restaurant & Lodge\, 1850 W Lake Blvd\, Tahoe City\, CA 96145. \nEnjoy dinner at Sunnyside either before or after the lecture where participants will be treated to 20% off their entire meal

SUMMARY:What are bees thinking?
DESCRIPTION:What are bees thinking? Cognition in captive and wild bumblebees \nBumblebees have long been studied for their learning and decision-making abilities\, but recent work has shown a range of ‘complex’ cognitive abilities and behaviors. UC Davis TERC welcomes Dr. Felicity Muth as she discuss her work at UC Davis Muth Lab using captive and wild bumblebees to ask questions about cognition in bees and beyond. Learn about her journey writing a children’s book about bee diversity and how it is used it to spread knowledge of native bees. \nThe Muth Lab work on the cognitive ecology of wild-foraging and lab-based bumblebees\, focusing on cognitive abilities that have a clear function in bees’ natural environments. Current projects in the lab include investigating cognition in relation to complex floral rewards and comparative cognition in wild bumblebees. They also work on anthropogenic effects on bee behavior and cognition\, in particular focusing on pesticide exposure.

SUMMARY:Coping with Climate Distress
DESCRIPTION:Join UC Davis TERC in welcoming Dr. Phillipe Goldin from the UC Davis Clinically Applied Affective Neuroscience Laboratory. \nHis presentation focuses on providing tools and methods for working with climate distress as a normal and reasonable response to very real and concerning changes in our collective environment. His research draws from clinical science of emotion regulation (cognitive reappraisal\, acceptance)\, contemplative science (mindfulness\, compassion\, interconnectedness\, nature meditations)\, and community resilience (based on evidence from studies that were conducted across the entire University of California system). His work can help us better understand how we can work together with climate distress\, self-efficacy\, and prosocial climate engagement to support ourselves\, our loved ones\, and our community.
